As settlement continued in the Pilot Mountain area, towns grew and trade routes developed from small farms to export centers. Because the fast-moving, deep rivers east of the Piedmont made it difficult to reach the ports of coastal North Carolina, early trade routes ran north to Virginia instead.
German, Scots-Irish, and English Quaker settlers brought a lasting cultural imprint to the area. Unlike much of eastern North Carolina, the Piedmont region — including Pilot Mountain — was settled mainly by subsistence farmers on smaller farms, with few or no enslaved laborers, and supported a wide range of religious denominations: Quaker, Lutheran, German Reformed, Moravian, Dunkard, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Methodist. That variety is still evident in Pilot Mountain today.
The Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad was built from the port of Wilmington to Mount Airy, passing through Pilot Mountain. With its completion in 1888, the depot became a center of commercial and social activity, and the railroad's arrival created the need for organized local government. The Act of Incorporation for the Town of Pilot Mountain was adopted on March 9, 1889.
The 20th century brought rapid change: the town's first public school arrived in 1910, the Bank of Pilot Mountain was constructed in 1914, and the first power plant began service in 1916. The 1930s brought the town's first public library and movie theater. In the 1940s, the arrival of textile manufacturers gave the local economy a major boost, and textiles remained a leading economic driver through the 1990s.
With the decline of large textile manufacturing, Pilot Mountain has shifted toward small, locally-owned businesses, viticulture, and innovative agriculture — the same mix of Main Street shops, wineries, and farms that shape downtown today.
